Anatolian Shepherd Guardian Dogs are unlike any other breed of dog I’ve known. Anatolians are an unusual and wonderful breed with over 2,000 years of selective breeding behind their unique genetic makeup. Working Anatolians live 24/7 with flock animals. It takes YEARS of evaluation to fully understand an Anatolian’s true working ability. Anatolians whose working ability have not been properly evaluated should be bred ONLY to FULLY EVALUATED AND SUPERIOR WORKING ANATOLIANS!
Otherwise, Anatolian working ability will be lost over time!
- Our farm just had a litter of pure Anatolians born October 21. They will be ready to go right before Christmas. These puppies are currently being raised as Livestock guardian dogs.

I have found the Anatolian Shepherd to be the ultimate in livestock guard dogs. They are loyal and hard working, not to mention handsome. The pups below were acquired by Shefaro from the Crockett Charolais Ranch where they were raised around cattle. The Pinto Anatolians were raised at Shefaro where live with sheep and goats.
Nestled in the piney woods of deep East Texas, we love the farm life and the values it gives our family. As well as growing top quality hay, we strive to raise excellent quality Brangus cattle, working Anatolian Shepherds, and heritage Spanish goats. Since we live in an area of very hot and humid summers, we decided to focus our cattle herd on the Brangus breed, known for their excellent ability to manage our extreme summer temperatures. For the same reasons, we decided on Spanish goats and we turned to the Anatolian Shepherd to guard over the stock and protect them from the large population of predators in our meadows and forests.
From the beginning our focus has been to maintain the breed as a livestock working dog. At the same time we strive to produce dogs that will have a long healthy working life. We have used OFA for hip evaluations in the past but prefer the PennHip evaluation now that we have a Vet to offer it within driving distance.
Anatolian Shepherd Dogs and Oberhasli goats are an important part of our farm. Enjoy your visit here and return for our occasional updates about our dogs, goats and family farm projects. We are a Code of Ethics Breeder located in Newberg, Oregon. We occasionally breed one of our excellent working Anatolian females with the goal of producing beautiful, healthy, and sound Anatolian Shepherd Dogs with great working potential.

Welcome to Briar Mountain Farm. Our farm was built in the late 1800’s and is located in Rocky Mount, VA. We are a small family farm that raises a beautiful herd of Purebred Nubian Dairy Goats, AKC Anatolian Shepherds, and we offer a full line of Handcrafted products that provide you with All Natural Skin Care made from our very own goat’s milk.
Our dogs are separated into teams of 2. Two sets are with 2 different flocks of sheep and and the puppies are raised with the poultry, bottle calves, and a few carefully selected sheep who are excellent puppy trainers. All the dogs are exposed to poultry at any given time due to the fact that our poultry free-ranges and can enter any field at any time. Our dogs are well socialized with strangers that we invite. If we are not present they will not allow a stranger to enter. They are wonderful with children. The dogs are well-bonded to any animal we have here.
Brutus is a beautiful purebred neutered male Anatolian Shepherd Dog, DOB 3/24/09. His owner had to sell her home and could not take Brutus or her other dogs with her. Brutus is good with female dogs and good with cats as well. He is housebroken and has good house manners. He is current on vaccinations and heartworm preventative and is microchipped as well. Brutus is on a daily dose of proin for incontinence, which the meds do a great job of controlling.
All the pups are gone except for Red boy (Sada) and Brown girl (Shansi) .. the two we have decided to keep for ourselves. It’s so hard to see the others leave, but I am very pleased they have loving new owners to live with. And,now I have new friends also. Below are some of my pups with their new owners and at their new homes.
Breeding for Quality – NOT Quantity!! Home bred for soundness of structure and stable temperaments!!
Having grown up with dogs, Laura Edstrom-Smith purchased her first Anatolian Shepherd, named Early Warning in 1990. The Anatolian Shepherd’s unique abilities as a livestock guardian whose strong maternal instincts make it an excellent companion dog are the characteristics which drew her attention to the breed. Early Warning soon became the love of Laura’s life. Her life-changing journey with the Anatolian Shepherd Dog had begun. Laura joined the national parent club, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog Club of America (ASDCA) in 1990. Over the years, Laura has owned several male and female Anatolian Shepherds.
